Barclays established operations in Seychelles, in 1959 by opening a local branch of Barclays Bank PLC in Victoria. At the time, Barclays was the only bank in the market and eventually became the banker to the Government before this role was transferred to the newly formed Monetary Authority in 1982. In half decade of its presence in Seychelles, Barclays, although now a local subsidiary rather than a branch (in 1999/2000 Barclays Bank PLC became Barclays Bank (Seychelles) Limited), grew from strength to strength, amid the emergence of 6 more banks in the local market, keeping its title as the leading bank. Today Barclays has the largest branch and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) network in the country with 8 branches and agencies, and 14 ATMs across the three main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.
